Nizar Amedi is the President of the Republic of Iraq, elected by the Council of Representatives in April 2026. A veteran Kurdish politician and longtime member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), he brings decades of experience at the highest levels of the Iraqi state to the presidency.

He holds a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Mosul, and worked as a physics teacher before entering politics through the PUK in the 1990s. He served as personal secretary to President Jalal Talabani from 2005 to 2008, then went on to serve as chief of staff and Director of the Office of the President under four successive Iraqi presidents — Talabani, Fuad Masum, Barham Salih, and briefly Abdul Latif Rashid — spanning nearly two decades of continuity at the center of Iraq’s presidency. He also served as Iraq’s Minister of Environment from December 2022 to October 2024, before heading the PUK’s Political Bureau in Baghdad.

Since taking office, Amedi has emphasized an “Iraq First” approach, opposing territorial attacks on Iraqi sovereignty and supporting regional peace initiatives.
